Whatever your previous CrossFit experience has been, we insist that you take the time to make sure you are investing your time and money wisely. At CrossFit Cornelius, we firmly believe that while the methodologies of CrossFit are similar at each location, no two boxes (CrossFit lingo for gym) are the same. There are many factors that play into that and we have listed a few below.
Coaching Staff and Classes
Once you have narrowed down the affiliates you want to try, take the time to visit. Talk with the coaches and the members. This will allow you to get a feel for the culture of the box as well as the coaching styles and class structure. CrossFit Cornelius is an inclusive coaching environment. We implore you to come meet our coaches and spend some time talking to us before making your final decision. Learn more about our Coaching Staff…
Communication and Organization
Although the fundamentals of CrossFit are the same wherever one goes, it’s safe to say no two boxes look or feel the same. What matters most is that you feel comfortable with the coaches and in the space. Anyone can write a workout down on a board and say 3-2-1 go. Consider yourself as both a learner and an athlete as you pay attention to how the coaching staff teaches and communicate; specifically how instruction, practice and WODs are organized. Keep in mind that most boxes don’t have a wall of mirrors (if any at all); there will be some air dynes and some rowers, but no machines. Decide for yourself if it’s the environment for you. By definition, all CrossFit boxes programming focus should be “core strength and conditioning”. The reality is just like each box’s layout is unique, so is the basis of their programming. Some focus the bulk of their attention on strength training, while others lean more towards endurance or metabolic conditioning. Some programs that we have seen primarily program short workouts, while others solely assign long workouts to their athletes. At CrossFit Cornelius, we firmly believe that there are ten recognized general physical skills: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy. You are as fit as you are competent in each of these ten skills. A regimen develops fitness to the extent that it improves each of these ten skills. Our goal is to provide constant variance for our athletes. We always keep our members and their bodies guessing. This keeps our workout results from plateauing and the boredom effect from setting in. At most traditional gyms there is no need or desire to get to know the people next to you on the elliptical trainer or shoulder press machine. In any case, they’re probably too busy talking on their cell phone or watching TV. CrossFit, on the other hand, is one hundred percent about the community and the people you “throw down with” every day. The reality is, you don’t have to like everyone, but don’t be surprised if it turns out that you do. CrossFit Cornelius’ community is filled with people from all walks of life from moms, dads, doctors, teachers, first responders and students, to professional and amateur athletes. You will immediately recognize our tight knit, but welcoming community when you are in one of our group classes. Our community is unrivaled. It is built on support and camaraderie and fueled by the expectation that you give 100% every time you walk through the doors of CrossFit Cornelius.
After taking the time to think about all of these factors and more, ultimately there is one more thing you can do. Trust your gut!
Where do you feel more comfortable? What fits your personal needs? Where do you see yourself reaching your goals?
